Ryan Lenora Brown is a freelance print journalist based in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she covers southern Africa for The Christian Science Monitor and other publications. She has reported on variety of subjects including elections in Botswana, xenophobia in Greece, and the death of Nelson Mandela from datelines stretching from Denver to Nairobi to Oxford. In addition to the CSM, her work appears in Al Jazeera English, The Atlantic’s CityLab, Salon.com, The Chronicle of Higher Education, North Carolina Public Radio, and The Jewish Daily Forward, as well as a variety of local media within South Africa. Brown holds a master’s in African studies from St. Antony’s College, Oxford University, and a bachelor’s in history from Duke University.
