Christiane Amanpour is CNN’s chief international correspondent. Amanpour, who is based in New York, has reported on crises from places such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, Pakistan, Somalia and Rwanda. In 1994, she won an IWMF Courage in Journalism Award for her coverage of the Balkans.

Amanpour’s assignments have ranged from exclusive interviews with world leaders to reporting from the heart of war zones. In 2005 she traveled the world following major stories such as the tsunami in Sri Lanka and the Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana. Among the many other stories that she has covered are the London terrorist attacks, the first democratic elections in Iraq, the Milosevic war crime trials and the death and funeral of Pope John Paul II.

In addition to nine Emmy awards, Amanpour has earned recognitions such as the 2002 Edward R Murrow Award for Distinguished Achievement in Broadcast Journalism and a George Polk Award for her work on the CNN International special Battle for Afghanistan in 1997. Her contribution to the 1985 four-week series, Iran: In the Name of God, helped CNN earn its first duPont award.

Amanpour began her CNN career in 1983 as an assistant on the network’s international assignment desk in Atlanta.
