The Courage in Journalism Awards honor brave women journalists from around the world and highlight the importance of freedom of the press and the courage needed in many countries to report the news.

Attended by close to 700 guests, The Courage in Journalism Awards draw sponsorship from prominent members of the media, corporate and philanthropic communities. The Courage in Journalism Awards program has been recognized as a uniquely moving and inspirational event:

“There are a huge amount, a huge number, of sacrifices that go into doing the kind of work that gets recognized by the IWMF every single year. If you take any one of the people who’ve won this [award] tonight, they exhibit a courage above and beyond the call of duty.”

Christiane Amanpour, chief international correspondent, CNN
2007 and 2008 Courage in Journalism Awards mistress of ceremonies
1994 Courage in Journalism Award winner

“I think they [the award winners] are extraordinary. Tonight we are acknowledging them, but everyday of their lives…they are unsung heroes in very dangerous, isolated situations where they have really been in danger. They really contribute to getting information out to help us, to help the world we live in.”

Angelina Jolie, actress
2007 Courage in Journalism Award presenter

“The sacrifice these women make in order to be able to bring the truth is something that most people don’t understand.”

-Maria Elena Salinas, network anchor and co-host, Univision
2007 Courage in Journalism Award presenter

We invite you to join us to honor some of the most courageous journalists working in the world today.
