Dear Governor Canto:

We are writing on behalf of the International Women’s Media Foundation to express our alarm concerning distinguished Mexican journalist Lydia Cacho, who began receiving alarming new threats in May.

Cacho, who won an IWMF Courage in Journalism Award in  2007, reports being watched and followed by unknown, armed individuals. On May 12, a man was allegedly seen taking photos of Cacho’s apartment in Cancun. The same man was reportedly seen outside her apartment with a gun two days later and again on May 22. On May 15, different men were allegedly parked outside her apartment door and later appeared outside her office, also in Cancun.

Cacho also says she has received death threats via her blog since February, including one that threatened to “slit her throat.”

Given the history of threats and harassment that that this brave journalist has endured over the years, we take these incidents very seriously. We urge Mexican authorities to investigate and protect Cacho so that she can continue her work as a journalist. We are concerned that the threats against Cacho and other Mexican journalists signal more restrictions on free expression and press freedom in Mexico. All viewpoints should be allowed to be expressed in the media without force or coercion and journalists should be protected in the course of their work by authorities.

As a network of thousands of women and men in the media around the world who are supporters of a worldwide free press, we respectfully urge you to take immediate action to ensure that Cacho is allowed to safely carry out her work. By using your power to ensure that justice is done in this case, you will take a step toward establishing a free and independent press in Mexico.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

Akwe Amosu, co-chair

Atentamente,

Akwe Amosu, co-presidente
Campbell Brown, co-presidente

The world is watching Mexico and the violence pervading your country. Some say Mexico is becoming a failed state. Prove that is not the case by protecting Lydia Cacho and other journalists who are brave enough to stay there and work even under threats.

How does one begin to appeal to the conscience of blood thirsty vampires? It is rather a challenge for the Mexican Government who should cash in on the privilege of producing the heroine of our time by ensuring her safety.

At a time there is a clamour for better governed societies which respect freedom of choice and expression, the Mexican government can not help but flow with the tide by ensuring that courageous men and women like Cacho are given room to operate unhindered. Those who rule by violence like Sadam and Charles Taylor have been paying the price and will continue to pay.

It is a shame that while people like me from Africa look up to Mexico as the place to be or learn trom, persons like Lydia Cacho live in fear. Governor Canto please do everything in your power to correct the wrong image that this saga is about briing to Mexico as a state. Thanks.

In Spanish and English: Ya No necesitamos gobiernos de izquierda o derecha. We don't need left or right wing governments anymore. We need RESPONSIBLE governments that will not attempt against any human being and will render violence UNACCEPTABLE. Mexico Governors: BE the responsible government your people need. Thanks for taking care of Lydia.

The responsibility of the Mexican government is to protect the all people of Mexico from the violence of organized crime. Protecting the voice of Lydia Cacho must be given top priority by your government. She not only represents the most oppressed and poorest of the poor, but she conveys the complicated nature of the issues and helps both Americans and Mexicans understand how we can better address our mutual problems. Americans will be watching closely to see what protections the Mexican government affords Ms. Cacho and her fellow journalists. Her safety is of utmost importance in securing the credibility and believability in protecting all of the citizens of your country against violence.

People only choose to silence someone who threatens them. Lydia Cacho is a true hero and should not be silenced. The truth must be heard, and the government of Mexico needs to protect and promote those who live in this manner.

As Canadians we have travelled/vacationed in Mexico often... there was a time we considered living there, ...NOT NOW! Not now that our eyes have been opened by brave story tellers willing to risk to save the peoples of Mexico! -- Not now, not until Lydia and those brave souls like her tell a different story of her country. We stand with you Lydia!! Our voices join yours!!

In Sri Lanka where nearly 20 journalists have been murdered in the last five years, journalists have been receiving nasty threats. Women, journalists and women journalists around the world should support Lydia Cacho. We shouldn't let the world grow violent and oppressive.
