IWMF Calls For Swift Investigation In Killing of Flor Alba Núñez Vargas in Colombia |
September 14, 2015 – The IWMF calls on the Colombian authorities to thoroughly investigate the violent death of journalist Flor Alba Núñez Vargas and bring the perpetrators to justice.
According to news reports, Núñez, a radio and TV reporter, was fatally shot by an unknown gunman in southwest Colombia on September 10 while she was entering La Preferida Estero radio station in the southern city of Pitalito.
“We urge the Colombian law enforcement agencies to devote all necessary resources to identifying the assailant, and prosecute anyone implicated in Núñez’ death to the fullest extent of the law,” said Elisa Lees Muñoz, Executive Director of IWMF.
Colombia continues to struggle with impunity for attacks on journalists. The country ranked 8th on the Committee to Protect Journalists’ 2014 Global Impunity Index. Colombian journalist Claudia Julieta Duque, a 2010 IWMF Courage in Journalism Award winner, is still fighting for justice for the psychological torture inflicted on her and her family by former officials of the Colombian central intelligence agency (DAS) in the wake of her reporting over a decade ago.
