The IWMF Stands in Solidarity with Women Facing Sexual Harassment and Assault
The International Women’s Media Foundation stands in solidarity with the courageous women in news media organizations who are coming forward to reveal their experiences about being sexually harassed and assaulted by powerful men in their midst. We applaud their bravery and decision to speak truth to power. The IWMF believes that no one should have to work in a hostile environment – including in newsrooms, locations in the field, or anywhere else.
We also echo the calls made by IWMF Board member and CBS This Morning co-anchor Norah O’Donnell, who unequivocally stated that such behavior is unacceptable, needs be investigated and must end.
“Sexual harassment and assault in the news industry directly impacts the news on which we all rely,” said Elisa Lees Muñoz, Executive Director of the IWMF. She added, “In such a hostile environment, many women feel they have no choice but to leave their jobs, which dilutes the diversity of perspectives that is so critical to effective reporting.”
