Women Journalists of Color in the U.S. Media

These leadership workshops were developed to help provide minority women journalists with the skills they need to make their voices heard in newsrooms.

Women journalists from print, broadcast and Internet media participated in workshops from 1999-2002. Programs were held in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' annual convention in Houston in 2000. The workshops cover:

  • Communications skills
  • Taking initiative
  • Diversity in the workplace
  • Conflict resolution and negotiation
  • Teambuilding
  • Career mapping

  • The workshop series followed an IWMF survey of more than 1,000 women journalists and newsroom managers in the United States that examined the impact and role of minority women journalists in the U.S. news industry. In the resulting report, Women Journalists of Color: Present Without Power, minority women journalists said they are not satisfied with promotion opportunities, nor are they provided with the leadership training they need in order to advance in the news media.

The Ford Foundation funded the survey and initial workshops. Additional support for workshops was provided by Wells Fargo and IWMF board member Judy Woodruff.
