Latin American Women's Media Initiative

The Latin American Women's Media Initiative will focus on giving women journalits the tools they need to excel as professionals and gain access to decision-making positions in the media.

The IWMF has created this project with the belief that once women reach critical numbers in media leadership, they will have a positive, transforming impact on how news is selected and presented.

An advisory committee has been established to help develop and shape the initiative. It is chaired by IWMF board member Maureen Bunyan and includes top women in the region's media:

  • Maria Cristina Caballero, Colombian journalist, Boston, Massachusetts
  • Cristiana Chamorro Barrios, Fundacion Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, Nicaragua
  • Maribel Cuervo de Paredes, Centro Latinoamericano de Periodismo, Panama
  • Gisele Dutra, Radiobras-TV Nacional, Brazil
  • Silvia Fesquet, Clarin, Argentina
  • Jacqueline Fowks, Universidad Catolica / Universidad de Lima, Peru
  • Veronica Lopez, Television Nacional de Chile
  • Martha Ramos Sosa, El Universal, Mexico

  • The initiative is currently in development and the IWMF hopes to offer programs in 2004. Please check back for details, or contact programs@iwmf.org to be added to the IWMF's database on Latin America.
