Reporting on HIV: A Resource Guide
International Organizations

The United Nations System

Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)
www.unaids.org
Perhaps the most important and comprehensive source on HIV/AIDS information, UNAIDS works to improve prevention of the disease and care for HIV/AIDS patients, reduce vulnerability to the virus and alleviate the epidemic's devastating social and economic impact.

United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)
www.unicef.org
UNICEF supports the fight against HIV/AIDS by addressing both the medical and the underlying societal causes of the epidemic. Since the mid-1980s, the agency has sought to control the spread of the virus, while at the same time developing programs among disadvantaged children, youth and women.

UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)
www.unifem.org
UNIFEM provides direct support for women's projects and promotes including women in decision-making roles in development programs.

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
www.undp.org/hiv
UNDP's HIV/AIDS and Development Program focuses on increasing awareness of the development implications of the HIV/AIDS epidemic; strengthening national capacity to plan and conduct activities that respond to the development problems caused by the HIV/AIDS epidemic; identifying and assisting sectors and programs adversely affected by the epidemic; strengthening and expanding HIV/AIDS-related community responses to the epidemic; assisting individuals, families and communities affected by the epidemic; promoting and developing programs for prevention, care and support for women; assisting NGOs working to respond to the problems caused by the epidemic; and developing comprehensive, integrated and coordinated national and regional responses to the epidemic.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO): Education Program for the Prevention of AIDS
www.unesco.org
The priority of UNESCO's educational program for the prevention of AIDS is to formulate and make available educational strategies and material so that AIDS education can be developed and adapted for specific socio-cultural contexts. The agency's long-term objective is to integrate the most successful educational strategies into national programs to help modify behavior among young people regarding AIDS, while at the same time giving rightful importance to health, self-esteem and mutual respect. Using school systems, UNESCO organizes regional seminars for NGOs and high-level officials from ministries of education and health to strengthen awareness among decision-makers about the need for preventive HIV/AIDS education and to provide them with effective educational strategies for the development, implementation and evaluation of HIV/AIDS programs and policies.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
www.unhcr.ch
UNHCR programs are specific to those countries hosting refugees and include: preventing HIV transmission through blood transfusion, preventing HIV through the use of universal precautions by supplying condoms, providing information on HIV and training health care providers on HIV.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)
www.unfpa.org
UNFPA considers prevention of HIV/AIDS an integral component of its reproductive health care programs. The agency is a co-sponsor of the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS, through which it supplies support at the inter-country level. Within countries, UNFPA supplies and distributes condoms, conducts in- and out-of-school HIV/AIDS educational activities, trains reproductive health information and service providers on HIV/AIDS, and conducts HIV/AIDS education and communications activities as part of its population and reproductive health care programs.

The World Bank Human Development Network
www.worldbank.org
The World Bank is one of the leading financers of HIV/AIDS prevention activities in the world. To date, the Bank has committed more than $800 million to more than 70 current and future projects aimed at preventing and controlling HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections around the world. The amount of money the bank lends for AIDS prevention is likely to increase as more countries seek financial assistance for implementing strategies to fight the epidemic. The majority of the bank's financing is provided to countries for use in developing strategies and services on the ground.

World Health Organization (WHO) General Secretariat
www.who.org
