Building Your Influence in the Newsroom
Module 3 - Newsroom Relationships

Getting to Know Your Boss

Getting to know your boss and developing a solid professional relationship is a good foundation for learning about her vision and goals. As you assess the current quality of your relationship, consider these questions:

  • Can you talk with your boss?
  • How well can you interpret what your boss is saying or doing?
  • How much time do you spend communicating?
  • Do you communicate most effectively by phone, email or by face-to-face interaction?
  • How does your boss communicate most effectively?

Answers to these questions can reveal areas for you to focus on. For example, you may realize after going through these questions that most of your communication with your boss is by email, but that both you and she prefer face-to-face communication. Perhaps you can plan to talk more frequently, or schedule some time to talk over lunch, in order to build your relationship.
