Test Your Understanding

1. Sara, the editor of the government desk and Emma, a government reporter, come to you for a meeting.  Sara tells you that Emma won’t accept the assignment to cover the press conference at the governor’s office tomorrow.  Emma says Sara isn’t supposed to give her assignments so she isn’t willing to drop the story she’s already working on to cover the press conference.  You are surprised because just last week you issued a memo announcing Sara’s promotion to editor and detailing her new responsibilities. As their supervisor, what would you do next?

A.  Give Emma another copy of your memo and tell her that if she had read it last week when it was sent out, she would know what to do in this situation.

B.  Tell Emma to cover the press conference.

C.  Tell Sara to work it out on her own with Emma.

D.  Meet with Sara and Emma together to review both of their roles and responsibilities.

E.  Meet with Emma alone and explain Sara’s new position and responsibilities.

2. How would your response to question 1 differ if Sara were a close personal friend of yours as well as an employee and Emma were a new employee who has a reputation as a troublemaker?

A.  Tell Emma that she’s in a new department now and her old behavior will not be tolerated.

B.  Tell Sara she should work it out herself and tell Emma that you said she should do whatever Sara tells her to do.

C.  It wouldn’t differ, I would respond the same way.

D.  Tell Sara and Emma they should both cover the press conference.
