Developing Radio Skills
Course Outline

Welcome to Developing Radio Skills. This online course is based on a training program organized by the IWMF's African Women's Media Center for radio journalists in December 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa. In developing this course, the IWMF built on the materials and information presented by Fiona Lloyd, a journalism trainer who designed and delivered that program. We are grateful for Ms. Lloyd's collaboration in developing this online program and for her permission to republish many of her resources here.

This course is designed to provide an introduction to radio reporting, writing and production. While there are many different techniques and processes used to make radio programs, this course will give you an overview of the basic skills and components that make radio programs possible.

It is divided into three modules, each of which will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. You may complete the course in one sitting or in multiple sittings. The modules are listed in a recommended order, but you may view them and take them in any order. You can go through the course on your own or work as a group on some of the exercises.

Each module contains a presentation, exercises, a self-assessment, additional resources and an evaluation. We hope you will find the information contained here to be useful to you in your work. Please let us know what you think!

Module 1: Power of Radio

Module 2: Skills for Radio Journalists

Module 3: Radio Programs and Formats

Funding to develop and publish this course has been provided through a generous grant from the Ford Foundation.
