Module 1: Power of Radio

Freedom of Speech

Benefits of Radio

Radio also allows the listener to talk back. In many parts of the world, for example, radio talk shows have proved vital in building democracy by giving people whose voices and issues are often marginalized in mainstream debates a chance to air their views, and an opportunity to directly challenge their elected representatives.

Challenges

The down side of this open communication is that people could take advantage of the opportunity to speak out. For example, consider:

  • How do you make sure that your program isn't exploited by people who want a vehicle, any vehicle, to air their views?
  • Where do you draw the line between freedom of speech and hate speech?
