Module 1: Power of Radio

Connecting with the Listener

Benefits of Radio

Radio is most effective when it connects on a human level. It can be like a friend, reaching out to people who are lonely and isolated, and giving them a sense of community. Maybe this is why some radio stations in Indonesia refer to their listeners as "sahabat" (my special friend). In West Africa, radio is nicknamed the "gossip box."

Radio can also help fight rumors and speculation by giving people facts. Like a friend, radio programs should present the facts in a calm, unemotional way.

Challenges

Because radio is most effective when it communicates person-to-person in a human and friendly way, you need to take care with your tone and presentation. You don't want to miss the chance to reach out with important news or significant issues.

To be effective, you will need to try to share your experiences, open up dialogue and try to understand your listeners' perspectives and needs.
