Module 3 - Conflict Resolution for Leaders

Glossary

Compromise: A strategy for resolving a conflict that involves each person getting something that she wants and each giving up something that they want. 

 

Consensus: Another strategy for resolving a conflict that involves bringing everyone who is involved in the conflict together and having them talk until they agree upon a way to settle the conflict or make a decision.  It is basically decision-making as a group process.

 

Dependence: Functioning, acting, performing or working together out of necessity.

 

Independence: Functioning, acting or performing alone.

 

Interdependence: The true teamwork of individuals or groups that can function singularly, but that come together to function as a team.

 

Lose/Lose: A conflict resolution result where neither person in the conflict achieves what she wanted.

 

Win/Lose: A conflict resolution result where one of the parties in conflict wins or achieves everything she wanted, and the other does not get anything.

 

Win/Win: A conflict resolution result that allows everyone to leave the situation with some of what they wanted.
