The IWMF Mourns the Passing of Linda Deutsch
The International Women’s Media Foundation is saddened by the death of Linda Deutsch, a retired Associated Press journalist, member of our Advisory Council, and 2015 IWMF Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.
Deutsch paved the way for women in media at a time where there were no blueprints and few role models. Beginning her career in trial reporting after the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, Deutsch became a trailblazer in the courtroom for the AP, covering landmark trials including O.J. Simpson, Charles Manson, and Michael Jackson. When she retired in December 2014, lawyers and judges called her an iconic figure and a champion of press freedom. One award said her “clear, concise reports have connected millions of readers around the world to the inner workings of America’s courtrooms.”
When receiving her Lifetime Achievement Award from the IWMF, Deutsch remarked: “I think you have to prove that you are so good that the news business can’t live without you.” We are certain that Deutsch’s legacy has made its indelible mark on the news industry. She will be deeply missed, and our thoughts are with her loved ones at this time.
