Irene studied Collective Communication at the University of Costa Rica where she also completed a Master's Degree in Public Health with emphasis in Health Management. She has been working since 2009 at La Nación, the newspaper with the largest national circulation. Her work consists of telling her audience the best ways to improve and maintain their health based on scientific evidence. With the Covid-19 pandemic, she is in charge of keeping her finger on the pulse through science: what is the virus like, what doubts does it leave, how does the disease behave in populations and what factors influence epidemiology? With the arrival of vaccines, she has reported on the different types, how they work, and maintains the "Countdown" tool, where she updates how vaccination is going in the country. He won the 2013-2014 National Science Journalism Award, the 2018 Health Systems Global Award, and honorable mention in the 2017-2018 National Science, Technology and Innovation Journalism Award.

Irene estudió Comunicación Colectiva en la Universidad de Costa Rica donde también cursó la maestría en Salud Pública con Énfasis en Gerencia de Salud. Trabaja desde 2009 La Nación, el diario de mayor difusión nacional. Su trabajo consiste en indicarle a su audiencia las mejores formas de mejorar y mantener su salud con base en evidencia científica. Con la pandemia de Covid-19 es la encargada de llevar el pulso a través de la ciencia: ¿cómo es el virus? ¿qué dudas deja? ¿cómo se comporta la enfermedad en las poblaciones y qué factores influyen en la epidemiología? Con la llegada de las vacunas, ha informado de los diferentes tipos, su funcionamiento, y mantiene la herramienta "Cuenta Regresiva", donde actualiza cómo va la vacunación en el país. Ganó el Premio Nacional de Periodismo Científico 2013-2014, el premio Health Systems Global 2018 y la mención honorífica al Premio Nacional de Periodismo de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación 2017-2018.
