Liz Mak is a writer and multimedia producer living in Oakland, California. She produces audio stories at the public radio show and podcast Snap Judgment, from WNYC. In her career, Liz has reported from Beijing to Chiang Mai to Standing Rock in 2016. Her visual, audio and written pieces have appeared in outlets including the New York Times, NPR and Studio 360. Liz's interest lies in first-person narratives, with a focus on cultural identity and human rights. Liz’s IWMF funding supports her reporting trip to Indonesia’s Anambas Islands. There, she will follow a group of Vietnamese refugees returning to the islands on which they were marooned in the ‘70s, after fleeing Vietnam by boat. She will document their journey as they attempt to find the graves of the loved ones they left behind.
