Benny Snyder

Benny Snyder is a photo editor and contest coordinator for the Associated Press and is currently based in Dallas, Texas. He has been with the AP for 27 years.

He was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. He studied Journalism at New York University in New York City and began his career with AP directly following graduation from NYU. He worked in AP’s New York Headquarters from 1997 to 2011 until transferring for a brief time to Chicago then on to Dallas in 2012.

At AP he has worked in several capacities as a photo editor – and for the last 17 years has overseen all of AP’s photojournalism contest coordination worldwide. Additionally, he edits AP’s Year in Photos and works on several special projects throughout the year. He also fills in when needed as a photo editor on AP’s Top Stories news desk.

In his time as contest coordinating photo editor – AP has won 6 photography Pulitzer Prizes and been a finalist numerous times, won several major awards including World Press Photo of the Year, Pictures of the Year International and NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism Photographer of the Year awards, the Robert F. Kennedy Humanitarian Award for Photojournalism, the Scripps Howard National Journalism Award for Photography and several Overseas Press Club awards including the Robert Capa Gold Medal.
