Julie Posetti, an award-winning journalist and academic, leads ICFJ’s global research program. Based in Oxford, England, she researches and writes at the intersection of journalism safety, media freedom, media and gender, journalism and disinformation, and the digital transformation of journalism, drawing on an international career spanning three decades.

Dr. Posetti joined ICFJ in 2019 from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford, where she led the Institute’s Journalism Innovation Project as Senior Research Fellow. She is the author of UNESCO’s ‘Protecting Journalism Sources in the Digital Age’ (2017) and co-editor of ‘Journalism, ‘Fake News’ and Disinformation’ (UNESCO 2018).  She was previously research fellow and editor with the World Editors Forum and the World Association of News Publishers in Paris.

A native of Australia, Dr. Posetti was a documentaries and features reporter, news editor, national political correspondent, and presenter for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), following a traineeship in commercial radio news. More recently, she headed up Digital Editorial Capability at Fairfax Media when it published Australia’s most respected newspapers, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, and theAustralian Financial Review.

Dr. Posetti holds a PhD from the University of Wollongong in Australia. Her dissertation focused on the intersecting themes of journalistic source protection, privacy, media freedom and digital rights. She remains affiliated with Oxford University through the Reuters Institute, and she’s also a senior researcher with Sheffield University’s Centre for Freedom of the Media (CFOM).
