Reveal wins 2 national Edward R. Murrow Awards

October 9, 2017 | Tennessee Watson | Reveal

Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting and PRX has won two national Edward R. Murrow Awards in the network radio category, the Radio Television Digital News Association announced Tuesday.

A survivor’s search for her abuser – “Dropped and dismissed: Child sex abuse lost in the system” – was named best news documentary. The gripping hourlong radio story was reported and produced by journalist Tennessee Watson, who tracked down her childhood gymnastics coach to accuse him of sexually abusing her decades earlier.

The piece was edited by Deborah George and co-produced by Laura Starecheski. Reveal’s data team – including Senior Editor Jennifer LaFleur and data reporters Sinduja Rangarajan and Emmanuel Martinez – and American University’s Investigative Reporting Workshop provided analysis and other support. It was accompanied by an original score by Reveal’s Jim Briggs.

Watson’s reporting was made possible in part with funding from the Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists, a program of the International Women’s Media Foundation.

“Making the Team,” detailing how UCLA’s athletic program had gamed the system, was honored for sports reporting. Reveal Producer Rachel de Leon exposed how the Division I university was counting male athletes as women to meet requirements of a federal law known as Title IX, intended to end gender discrimination in schools.

The story was part of an hourlong episode on Title IX issues, edited by Senior Radio Editor Cheryl Devall and Managing Editor Andy Donohue.

The Edward R. Murrow Awards recognize outstanding work produced by radio, television and online news organizations around the world. A complete list of winning entries for 2017 can be found
