A father holds his four-year-old daughter at Bugando Medical Centre in Mwanza, Tanzania. She’s developed a tumor that has paralyzed her from the waist down, and is getting ready to start a course of chemotherapy at the hospital before undergoing surgery. The family had arrived in Mwanza from another region about 200km away several weeks earlier when I met them. They were exhausted and frustrated from trying to navigate the complicated and expensive process of figuring out their daughter’s treatment. – Krista Mahr
