Artisanal gold miners in Eastern Congo are now required to form cooperatives, but these are not labor focused organizations. The diggers work in dangerous conditions, get killed in mud slides, and only get paid for gold they find – the first exchange in a long supply chain that leads to places like US, Geneva, Dubai or Malaysia.
