As an independent print journalist, it’s rare for me to have the opportunity to work with fellow reporters. There are definitely perks of working within a group – on the first day, I accompanied radio journalist Erika Aguilar to a beachside interview on the environmental effects of Tijuana’s infrastructure challenges, and stumbled upon a new story idea on the borderless ocean and the people that love it.

Here, one of those champions of the ocean – a surfer – in Playas, just south of the U.S.-Mexico border.
