Gloria Sifa sat down with me to describe how playing professional soccer in Rwanda has changed her life. It has allowed her to go to school for free and save money to send home to her family. But sports are still seen as unconventional for women in Rwanda, and Gloria and her teammates on AS Kigali are part of the first generation of women who are embracing life as athletes. I’ve been spending the week talking to women who have been part of this project to bring sport to the girls of Rwanda in the years after the country’s genocide. – Megan Specia
