I met Nighty in the countryside of northern Uganda, and I was really touched by this woman. A few years ago she lost her husband to suicide. Suicide rates are very high in this part of Uganda, which is still recovering from the brutal LRA conflict. The area is facing many challenges : unemployment, lack of infrastructure and health facilities… But Nighty is a very joyful woman. She decided to not remarry because she was very angry against men- and she is still full of life. Even though there were clear language barriers between us, we found ourselves laughing and communicating in other ways. She was very eager to invite me into her home – a traditional banda (mud hut)- and to show me around. Her thatched ceiling was decorated with hanging a variety of cooking utensils , including all her pots and pans, all in different colors and patterns. It was a beautiful and emotional moment.
