I visited an artisanal gold mine in Shinyanga district in northern Tanzania last week. The area has been mined since the early 1990s, and a busy village of more than 8,000 miners, families and business people has sprung up at its edge, full of restaurants, hostels, hair salons and, of course, gold brokers. Here, two miners rinse ground rock   to extract gold particles from the powder.
