Laura Morel has been a Reporter at the Tampa Bay Times in Florida for six years.

Born and raised in Miami Laura always liked writing. She was already active in her college newspaper in Emerson, Boston. “I like telling people’s stories,” she said, “especially people who don’t have a voice.”

A couple of years ago, Laura was among a team of reporters who published a data-driven investigative project about police activity at Wal-Mart stores and the burden the large retailer places on law enforcement.

“I really enjoy seeing my reporting having an impact on the community and I hope that keeps me going in my career,” she says. Laura is now heading to the U.S.-Mexico border to cover the aftermath of the end of the wet-foot-dry-foot policy. She’ll be reporting from Laredo, Texas and Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas.
