Meet Whitney Eulich, who we asked how the reporting trip changed her perceptions of the Mexico-U.S. Border. “One of my biggest takeaways is the diversity of the border. It’s so often referred to as a singular entity – The Border, The Wall – but each community and region we visited provided a different perspective on what this division between the US and Mexico means. For some, it completely changed daily life, turning 20 minute commutes to the US into 3 hour ordeals. For others it’s become so quotidian that the wall has almost become invisible, used by neighborhood kids as a jungle gym or a place for neighbors to build storage or shrines. Each time I thought I grasped the implications of the border, I’d hear a new point of view that rocked my assumptions: the best possible thing that can happen on a reporting trip.”
