Noemy Belinda Zuniga Lopez, 40, tells IWMF fellows Monica Pelliccia and Francesca Volpi how she learnt to use organic fertilizer and make her own organic pesticide for her corn crop. She and her 62-year-old father, Corneli Carcamo, work their small plot in Valle de Jamastran in Yuscaran, Honduras, and also sell dairy products for a living. “Who would have thought corn that grows with chicken shit and water would taste so much sweeter than what we were growing with chemicals earlier,” she says. She and her collective, Perlas de Orient are trying to raise awareness about organic farming in the village so that the land will yield more and fewer of them will have to migrate.
