Photographer Meghan Dhaliwal and I, accompanied by our awesome fixers Jordi and Mariana, went to a small mosque in Rosarito, Baja California. We were hoping to talk to migrants, thinking that if they were building religious community here, they might be planning to stay in Mexico for the long haul.
We didn’t meet any migrants, but we did meet Salma and her husband Jack, who kindly invited us to their oceanside home afterward. Salma showed us the trinkets she’s collected from her travels around the world, the five different themed sets of toy train tracks she’d built in their kitchen (shown in the picture), and the tiny diorama of the house from the movie “Up” hanging from their ceiling.
Some days you just don’t find the story. But you might meet people who fascinate you anyway.
