Rural reporting often comes with its special challenges, and rural Rwanda is no exception. But there are also wonderful rewards. For example, when Washington Post colleague Danielle Paquette and I went to a village outside Butare (also know as Huye), we were surrounded by the children in the photo above. They were endlessly curious about who we were and what we were doing there. The son of one of our subjects was especially interested in Danielle and in being photographed. At one point, he snatched Danielle’s sunglasses and put them on his own face. He readily jumped on her lap when she asked him to do so. It was a sweet, funny moment, and his warmth was very heartening. – Whitney Shefte
