To be given a week to report in a new country seems, in a sense, a small
injustice. Just when you’re finally beginning to pick up on the cadences of
the place, you’re gone. At the same time, however, it’s easy to forget that
being new to a place is itself a great gift, a kind of reporters’ sixth
sense. When nothing is ordinary or mundane, the world around you takes on a
sharpness and vivid focus that’s rare in everyday life. It is in these
moments, I think, that we often notice the most, ask the best questions,
and discover the most unusual stories. Here’s to a week of vertigo and
discombobulation, and all the great stories that will (hopefully) bring.
