Wayuu women

“In my family we had my grandmother, she was the caqique of the casa. She was the one that said do this, don’t do that. If you didn’t listen, you were going to have problems. She died a few years ago and now its my mumma that is in charge.”
This was Teresa, a Wayuu woman and community organiser, speaking about the role women have in Wayuu society.
Her male work colleague (they call each other “sister” and “brother”) concurred.
“For us it’s women that resolve our problems, our conflict in the community, women are sacred.”
It was all very inspiring until we heard men can take multiple wives, which women cannot. So there is still a little way to go.
