We made a quick stop at the location where Pope Francis gave a Mass during his visit here in February. Just across the road is this memorial to migrants who have died crossing the border, right next to the Rio Grande.

My colleague covering the trip reported that the Pope walked up the ramp of the memorial, stood alone for a few moments and then left flowers in front of the cross– while the crowd of 200,000 on the Mexican side watched in complete silence.

Today the ramp is closed off haphazardly with orange netting, and the flow of people undertaking dangerous journeys to the north in search of a better life continues. Karen Z.
